MODS is the PROGRESSIVE dysfunction of ≥2 organ systems in an acutely ill patient, usually from SIRS/sepsis. The lungs are typically the FIRST organ affected (ARDS). MODS carries a high mortality (40-80%). Treatment is supportive — there is no specific therapy. Prevention (early resuscitation, source control) is critical.
